How to use the Background Remover

The Background Remover is a free tool that lets AI automatically detect subjects — people, products, animals — and make only the background transparent, just by dragging and dropping an image. No manual selection or pen work is required, and your images are never uploaded: everything runs in your browser. This page covers what the tool can do, how to use it, how to choose an output format, and frequently asked questions.

What this tool does

How to use

  1. Drag & drop your images, or click to select them (multiple selection is supported). The AI model downloads automatically the first time.
  2. Choose an output format (PNG, WebP, or JPG).
  3. Press “Remove background” and the AI cuts out each subject one by one.
  4. Download images individually or all together as a ZIP.

Choosing an output format

Pick one of three output formats depending on how you'll use the cutout.

FormatBackgroundBest for
PNG (transparent)TransparentMaximum compatibility. The go-to format for keeping transparency across documents, slides, and other tools.
WebP (transparent)TransparentWebsites and blogs. Same look as PNG at a smaller file size — better for page speed (Core Web Vitals).
JPG (white background)WhiteWhen you don't need transparency — white-background product shots or profile photos. The lightest option, but transparency is not preserved.

To compress, resize, or convert your cutout further, try the Image Compressor & WebP Converter (it keeps transparency intact).

Tips for clean cutouts

Frequently asked questions

Are my uploaded images stored anywhere?
No. The AI cutout runs entirely in your browser (on your own device), and your images are never sent to a server. The only network activity is the one-time download of the AI model itself.
Is it free? Are there any limits?
It is completely free, with no usage limits and no account required. You can cut out as many images as you like.
Why does the first run take a while?
Because the AI model that detects subjects (about 40MB) is downloaded only the first time. From the second time onward, your browser cache is used, so processing starts right away.
What kinds of images cut out cleanly?
Photos with a clear boundary between the subject and the background — people, products, animals — work best. Fine hair, semi-transparent objects, and photos where the subject blends into the background may produce rougher edges.
How do I make the cutout file smaller?
Use the companion Image Compressor & WebP Converter to convert to WebP, compress, and resize while keeping transparency.
