How to use / FAQ

How the Handwriting Text Generator works, and answers to common questions.

๐Ÿ–ฑ๏ธ Basic steps

  1. Type your text. Line breaks become new lines.
  2. Pick a template. YouTube thumbnail 1280ร—720, blog cover 1200ร—630 and more set the canvas for you.
  3. Choose a font, paper and pen. Five Japanese and five Latin handwriting typefaces are included.
  4. Tune the handwriting feel. Raising line tilt and baseline wave a little is what makes it read as human.
  5. Save as PNG, JPG or SVG.

๐ŸŽฌ Making thumbnails and blog covers

Choose the YouTube thumbnail 1280ร—720 or blog cover 1200ร—630 template and your text is centered on a canvas of exactly that size. If it does not fit, it is shrunk automatically, so long headlines still export cleanly.

For thumbnails, switch the pen to Marker or Felt-tip so the strokes stay readable at small sizes. Set the paper to None (transparent) and save as PNG to layer the lettering over a photo or illustration.

๐Ÿ–‹๏ธ Vertical writing and manuscript paper

Set the writing direction to Vertical and the text flows from the rightmost column to the left. Choose the Manuscript grid paper and the text becomes monospaced, with one character per cell โ€” the traditional Japanese layout for haiku, quotations and Japanese-style banners.

๐Ÿ’พ Choosing PNG, JPG or SVG

FormatBest for
PNGTransparent backgrounds โ€” layering lettering over thumbnails and banners.
JPGWorking alongside photos, or keeping the file small. No transparency.
SVGPrint and large scaling, or editing colors and shapes in Illustrator or Figma.

All three are drawn from the same outline data, so they match (the only exception is pens with bleed or grain, where the SVG uses filters and differs in fine detail).

โ“ Frequently asked questions

Can I use the images commercially?

Yes. Every typeface here is licensed under the SIL Open Font License, so there is no restriction on using the images or video thumbnails you create, including commercially. Only selling the font files themselves is prohibited.

Can I make YouTube thumbnails?

Yes. The YouTube thumbnail 1280ร—720 template gives you a 16:9 canvas. Exporting at 3ร— produces 3840ร—2160, the resolution YouTube recommends. Oversized text is shrunk automatically.

Can I edit the SVG in Illustrator or Figma?

Yes. The exported SVG converts every character to an outline path, so it opens identically without the font installed. You cannot retype the text, but fills, strokes and scaling are all free to change.

Can I export with a transparent background?

Set the paper to None (transparent) and save as PNG. JPG cannot store transparency, so it is filled with the paper color instead.

Does it support vertical writing and manuscript paper?

Yes. Vertical writing flows right to left, and manuscript grid paper places one character per cell.

Why do Japanese fonts take a moment to load?

Japanese typefaces cover thousands of characters and weigh 3โ€“9 MB each. The font file is required to convert characters into outlines, so there is a wait the first time you pick one. After that it switches instantly.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Layout and image export happen entirely in your browser. The only server request is for the font file.
